Week 1 on the 21-Day Wonder Diet. Total weight lost 1.5kg.

Posted in 21-Day Wonder Diet, Diet & Exercise with tags , on June 20, 2010 by Dobsessed

I’ve now finished 7 days on the 21-Day Wonder Diet and here are the stats:

Total weight loss: 1.5kg

Lost 1 inch off my waist, 1 inch off my bust, and 1/2 inch off my hips

Spent approximately $250 on groceries

Favourite meal so far: Sesame Beef stirfry

Worse meal so far: Tuna and Orange salad with soy

Well, I’ve done 7 days on my 21-Day Wonder Diet and those were the results.  Not glowing…I really had hoped to lose more weight, but I weighed myself this morning and I’d actually gained 1/2 a kg, so overall, my total weightloss for a week is 1.5kg.  Still pretty good but I REALLY wanted to have lost 2.5 by the end of the first week! Oh well…a lot of people say you should judge it by your clothing, not by the scales and it is promising that I’ve lost some inches.

I don’t know why I put on half a kilo this morning, perhaps it was because I ate out last night.  We went to my favourite Vietnamese restaurant in West End and instead of ordering my usual favs, I went for San Choi Bow, savoury meat in lettuce cups.  It was very tasty and I didn’t eat anything else…so perhaps it was that…but I still feel like I made a healthy choice so I don’t feel like I fell off the wagon or anything.  I think it might’ve had something to do with portion size though…

Anyways, I’m ready to start week 2 on the diet, done the grocery shopping for 3 days so far and that cost about $80…so it looks like week two may be slightly cheaper than week one because I’ve bought a lot of the spices.

Oh yeah, despite the bran and cranberry being very convenient for me, I can’t really eat it.  Bran is wheat, and it gave me hives eating it yesterday and also gives me a stomach ache…so I can’t continue on it.  I also didn’t do today’s menu (Day 8).  It’s supposed to be a berry smoothie, a lentil, tuna and tomato salad and Crunchy chicken salad cups…but the thought of eating canned tuna in a can with springwater again makes me gag, and the chicken cups calls for celery (which I hate) so I’m skipping day 8 altogether and repeating day 2 – because I had a second serve of the chili which I’d stashed in the freezer.

Let’s see what this week will bring…

Day 6 on the 21-Day Wonder Diet

bran and cranberry muesli | wonton noodle soup | pasta marinara

Today’s weight loss/gain: lost 0kg

Total weight loss: 2kg

Today’s supposed calorie intake: 1226

Today’s actual calorie intake: 1450

Today’s exercise: None

It looked like it was going to rain today, so I didn’t bother walking.  I was also running late, so I didn’t make the corn fritter breakfast.  In the 21-Day Wonder Diet book, they give you a simple recipe for bran and cranberries which you can have for breakfast instead of the usual menu item listed.

I have to admit that I did not feel like I was on a diet at all today.  I’d made plans to meet my friend for lunch and Little Singapore is not a place where you can just order a salad.  I LOVE Malaysian/Singaporean/Chinese food, and I think Little Singapore serves up one of the most authentic dishes in Brisbane.  If you ever visit one, I’m sure you’ll notice that they’re always busy.  Always.  My usual fabourite dishes from Little Singapore are Curry Spiced Beef with rice, Butter Oat Prawns with rice, Combination ho fun with egg sauce…list goes on. Today, I went for the healthiest option I could think of, wonton noodle soup.  I drank all the clear broth, had all the wontons, ate about two spoonfuls of noodles and left the rest.

After lunch…I think there must’ve been something in the soup, because I was craving sugar, perhaps the soup had a lot more salt that what I’ve been eating?  I resisted the Sin Bin (it was calling me…”eat me…eat me”) and had 8 pistachios.

Dinner was pasta marinara.  Usually I would’ve made it with olive oil, butter, bit of sugar, touch of cream…but I left all those out, and the only thing I added are salt and pepper and fresh basil.  It wasn’t bad and I was completely stuffed afterwards (but my usual recipe is better – and definitely fattier).

I’m hoping I register some weight loss next week…I feel rather deflated today.  Oh yeah, at the end of my first 7 days, I’ll list how much I’ve spent on groceries in total…so far, it’s about $220!! So no, definitely not a cheap diet.  Jenny Craig or Lite & Easy would be much cheaper.  I can adapt these recipes so that they’re gluten free though which is a plus.

Day 5 on the 21-Day Wonder Diet

Tomato and egg on rye | ricotta, basil and ham wrap | sesame beef stir-fry

Today’s weight loss/gain: lost 0kg

Total weight loss: 2kg

Today’s supposed calorie intake: 1020

Today’s actual calorie intake: 1020

Today’s exercise: 70 minute walk

No weight loss today…which made me think.  I barely ate anything yesterday, I only had about 700 calories, which is half of what some people would have if they were on a diet!  I remember once counting my breakfast calories, baked beans with hot buttered toasts, 2 milky chocolatey coffees, and that by itself was already over 700 calories, so I couldn’t believe I only ate 700 calories yesterday and didn’t register any weight loss.

This made me think, by mid afternoon yesterday, I sort of lost that starving, peckish feeling…so it must mean my metabolism slowed down because it was in ‘starvation’ mode?  I think so…that’s the only thing I can think of really.

Anyways, I was very good, I didn’t detour off the diet (much) today.  For breakfast, instead of an English muffin, I just put my fried egg and sliced tomato on some toasted rye bread.  I will admit that an English muffin would probably have been tastier than the rye that I’ve had in the fridge for 5 days.

I had a sweet, delicious orange for morning tea, but I must say…now that I think about it, I didn’t feel hungry at all before I fished it out of the fridge to eat it.

Lunch were wraps, which was nice (but soggy)…I made it this morning and toasted it for lunch.  It was already soggy when I took it out of the fridge at lunch time and toasting it only mildy browned it…but I still ate a soggy lunch today.  Flavour wise, it was not too bad, texture is soooo important though! My, how my standards have dropped!

Dinner was really good.  I didn’t have any Bok Choy so I used green beans, and some like it hot, I like it very hot so instead of one big chilli, I added two, fresh birds eye chilli which gave it some punch.  I don’t eat cous cous because I don’t eat wheat (allergy) so I had some polenta with it instead.  I really, really would’ve preferred a pile of fluffy white rice with it, but it really was quite tasty.  A HUGE IMPROVEMENT on yesterday’s disgusting food.  Still can’t get over it! Orange, tuna and soy sauce indeed! The hell you say!

Day 4 on the 21-Day Wonder Diet

Bran and cranberry muesli | orange-roasted pumpkin and tuna salad | warm spiced chicken salad

Today’s weight loss/gain: lost 0.5kg

Total weight loss: 2kg

Today’s supposed calorie intake: 755

Today’s actual calorie intake: 710

Today’s exercise: 70 minute walk & 30 minute personal training session – we did  weights today

So, I’ve been raving about how everything has been very tasty on this diet.  Today was the day where that all went to hell…at least with lunch anyways.  I was ecstatic when I weighed myself this morning and realised I’d lost another 0.5kg.  Pretty impressive I thought…and I haven’t felt any urges towards lunging at the work’s sin bin (full of chips and choccies) or anything like that.

Breakfast was quick and easy.  I made a container of this bran and cranberry muesli a few days ago, and in the diet, it says you can eat this everyday for breakfast if you can’t be bothered cooking.  I’ve never had bran before so didn’t know what to expect.  I didn’t have any blueberries, so I used frozen raspberries.  It was OK, the oats and the bran got soggy as soon as milk got on it (nothing like Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes) but I liked the cranberries and it was quick and easy.

I was pretty hungry by 9, so I had a double long black and that seemed to hold me for a couple of hours before I munched on two carrot sticks and got bored.  They’re sooo boring, I couldn’t finish the rest of them.  I ended up eating a can of Chicken in a Can – my transgression for today.  I then had a personal training session where we (I) did weights.  Oh yeah, here’s discipline, I got a flu shot today and said ‘No’ to the lollipop they offered.  Pretty impressive huh?

Now, I don’t know who thought orange, tuna, pumpkin and soy sauce would go well together…but let me just say, it REALLY doesn’t.  The soy sauce completely overtook the whole salad, and I couldn’t eat it all all, it was disgusting, the tuna was gross, the soy sauce dressed salad was gross and I ended up throwing it out before I got halfway through it.  I really tried to eat it too, mentally saying, ‘There’s no more food until dinner’ but I just couldn’t do it.  Note to self, do NOT repeat Day 4.

Dinner was the warm chicken salad.  I couldn’t find Tandoori powder in the shops, so I just used sumac with curry powder and salt instead.  The salad was tasty, (the meat was anyways) and had a bit of tang from the lemon.  I would’ve killed for a mound of rice though.

Today was definitely hard, with the uninspiring food and all…if it weren’t for the fact that I registered weight loss today…I probably would’ve thrown in the towel.  Oh well, let’s see what happens tomorrow…

Day 3 on the 21-Day Wonder Diet

Mango Banana lassi | roast beef and coleslaw on rye | sumac fish with couscous polenta salad

Today’s weight loss/gain: lost 1.5kg

Total weight loss: 1.5kg

Today’s supposed calorie intake: 1215

Today’s actual calorie intake: 1360

Today’s exercise: 70 minute walk

I cannot believe I made it to Day 3…I can’t remember the last time I made it to Day 3 on any diet (although I’ll admit that I’m cheating here and there and I’ve yet to completely follow a diet to the letter).   On Shakes, I stayed with it for 1 day before I was fantasizing about chicken curry on the bus.  On the Soup Diet, I lasted 1.5 days.   On the lemon detox, I lasted til morning tea.  Yes. I’m not very disciplined when it comes to restricting food.  I must say this has been a pretty easy diet to follow, I get to eat food and everything has been pretty tasty (yes, I still think this after three days).

Breakfast this morning was a thick mango lassi.  I had no mango, and mangoes aren’t in season, so I used half a small banana.  With the lime juice, the lassi was quite tangy and I had it with a long black and lots of water.  I was able to hold out until 9 in the morning before feeling like I was starving.

I got on the scales this morning and had lost 1.5kg!  I was quite pleased and with renewed motivation, I was able to resist the lamingtons, choc-chip cookies, choc-chip muffins, white chocolate mud cakes that were calling out to me at morning tea.  I cracked and had 6 breadsticks (without any dip)…I snaffled them up so quickly I barely even noticed!

Lunch was 2 slices of roast beef (from the deli) with homemade coleslaw, it was nice…but I really wished I toasted the Rye because it was very hard.  Also, two hours after lunch, I was starving.  I had a pear but I was still pretty hungry.  I cracked and I opened up a big can of Chicken in a Can and had about a third of it straight with chopsticks.  I’m not the biggest fan of chicken in a can, I think they have the texture and smell of tuna, but it’s a very quick, easy protein hit.

I was soooooooo looking forward to going home and having dinner.  I was soooooo hungry but I didn’t feel weak or tired.  Dinner was very generous, a big slab of fish, a yummy zuchinni and cherry tomatoes salad and I didn’t want to use cous cous – too much wheat, so I had a piece of pan fried polenta instead.  It was goooood…and now I know why they make you wait so long for dinner at fine dining restaurants, you’re so hungry everything ends up tasting delicious.  Once again, I had to add salt to the fish and the salad, but overall…a really quick dish to prepare.

Can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings (in terms of weight loss)!

Day 2 on the 21-Day Wonder Diet

Posted in 21-Day Wonder Diet, Diet & Exercise with tags , on June 14, 2010 by Dobsessed

Cheesy corn on Rye | Potato, Tuna and egg salad | Chilli con carne

Today’s supposed calorie intake: 1060

Today’s actual calorie intake: 1450

Today’s total exercise: 45 minutes walk

I started the day by taking my sister’s dog Ollie to Kangaroo Point Cliffs for a walk…it was very relaxing walking by the river and I managed to get in about 45 minutes before heading home for breakfast.  Someone said to me that doing 20 minutes exercise is worse than what a senior citizen would do…so I thought I better step it up.

Today’s food was actually pretty filling, and if it weren’t for the fact that my family was over making triangular bundles of Chinese sticky rice, I probably wouldn’t even have diverted off the diet.  After my walk, I snaffled up a banana and showered before eating breakfast.  Breakfast was actually pretty yummy, I would never have considered this corn and ricotta combination.

Lunch was a a lovely potato, tuna and egg salad – sorry forgot to take a picture but quite filling.  I didn’t actually finish eating it, and had the remaining for afternoon tea.  I’ve been walk around with a total bloated belly today because I’ve been sampling everything that’s been cooked today.  Apparently, I have a habit of starting a diet during Chinese festivities.  Very annoying (for me).

Oh yeah, good thing the book includes weights for everything, in the salad, they’d specified 6 baby potatoes (240g)…I washed and cooked 6 potatoes before thinking…hmm…this seems like a lot of potatoes.  I decided to weigh it and it was actually 885g!! So I only ended up using two potatoes! That would’ve been a filling lunch indeed!

Dinner was chili con carne with brown rice.  I have never had brown rice before so didn’t know what to expect.  I cooked it according to packet instructions and brown rice is a lot more grainy than plain white rice and isn’t at all fluffy.  You don’t get much of it either.  A normal serving of rice is usually half a cup per person, I was given 1/6 of a cup for lunch today…you do get a very generous serving of chili though, but the chili is a base of tomato rather than meat.  I didn’t think the recipe had enough flavour, so I added bay leaves, cardomon pods, ground coriander and salt…which made it tastier.  I’m pretty sure spices are zero calories…aren’t they?

I’m also prepared for tomorrow.

I’m going to weigh myself again tomorrow and see how I’m travelling.  Although, I think I’m not doing that well because I keep cheating!! Tomorrow I won’t though because I’m at work…hopefully…

melon trio with fresh lime and yoghurt| dijon chicken and salad wrap| spiced lamb cutlets with coriander pumpkin

Today’s weight loss/gain: +0.5kg

Total weight loss: N/A

Today’s calorie intake: 1435

Today’s exercise: 20 minute walk with Ollie

Today was Day 1 on the 21-Day Wonder Diet.   It really wasn’t as hard as I thought it’d be…I was actually excited to start, I must say, I DID cheat though, but only because I was home all day, and didn’t get up to much.  If I was at work…or really busy, I probably wouldnt’ have gone hunting for food.

I stuffed up in the morning and cut myself up more fruit than I was supposed to, but thankfully, halfway through eating, I felt full, so I stopped eating, so I didn’t actually go over what I was supposed to eat.  So breakfast was melons and fruit yoghurt.

A couple of hours later, I was starving, I’m usually one of those people who have proteins or something quite substantial for breakfast, a few pieces of melons just didn’t cut it.  Snack was capsicum with cottage cheese, at first I thought the capsicums were quite sweet, but then I got bored and just ate the cottage cheese and left the capsicums.

Lunch was a chicken salad wrap, not bad at all…but needed salt, the recipes doesn’t call for any salt, but I need salt so I salted heavily.  After lunch I hoed into some mini oreos, some Movenpick tiramisu ice-cream and some homemade butterscotch sauce.  They were calling out to me…but honestlly, I wasn’t hungry…I just wanted to clear it out of my house. For the remaining 20 days of my diet, you see.

By 5:30pm, I was hungry again, so I cooked dinner, lamb chops with some chickpea and pumpkin salad.  I was very surprised, it was very tasty…something I would cook over and over again.  Once again, they didn’t specify salt, and I added it…but overall, the meal was satisfying and yummy.

I’m excited to do the next day – without cheating!  So far, this has been the easiest diet I’ve tried (not including Jenny Craig where food is prepared for you etc).
